• The notebook of a synthetic chemist should look something like this (confirm the details for your lab with your advisor)

NMR & IR Resources

• NMR Solvent Shifts - residual solvent & water shifts (.pdf from Cambridge Isotope Labs, a solvent supplier)

• Common Impurities in NMR Solvents - an excellent reference (J. Org. Chem. 1997, 62, 7512-7515) this will only work from an Ohiolink campus

• Integrated Spectral Data Base System for Organic Compounds - search for NMR & IR spectra

Techniques

When approaching new techniques, you should first make sure you understand the absolute basics as laid out in Zubrick's The Organic Chem Lab Survival Manual. You used this book during the CHEM 233/234 sequence. The Advanced Lab (Tom 001) has a copy of the more detailed Techniques in Organic Chemistry by Mohrig, Hammond and Schatz. Following are further resources.

• Synthetic organic chemistry can seem like voodoo. To help fight this, University of Rochester Professor Alison. J. Frontier has compiled an excellent page about technique the she calls "Not Voodoo." It is well worth you time.

• If you will be doing flash chromatography, read the original paper by Still. It's full of great info.

• To visualize your TLC, try a UV lamp first. If that doesn't work, look here for other methods.
