Area of Research: Oscillatory Biochemical Systems

If you look closely at a plant or animal you will see that life results from a variety of intertwined cyclical processes---heart beats, neural signals, the sleep-wake cycle, etc. My research interests revolve around trying to understand the chemistry behind such phenomena. At this point, we are defining the chemical role of astrocytes within the central nervous system. We are creating a physiologically relevant model of the Ca2+ flux in astrocytes and will be coupling this to neural models in order to obtain a more chemically-oriented idea of what is happening when these cells interact during development and signaling.
